Behavior Based Safety, BBS, is a proactive effort or approach to improve safety behavior in a specific area, such as in a workplace. It mainly focuses on reducing risks, dangers, or even incidents by observing human behavior and deciding what follows when the behaviors take place. Behavior Based Safety Training is applicable in any industry and therefore its importance should be noted.

What is Behavior Based Safety (BBS) Training?

According to Cambridge Center for Behavior Studies, Behavior Based Safety (BBS) is “an application of the science of behavior change to real-world safety problems.” Meanwhile, Cooper (2009) stated that BBS is a process that creates a safety partnership between management and employees that continually focuses people’s attention and actions on their and others’ daily safety behavior.

Therefore, Behavior Based Safety Training is a proven and effective tool to reduce workplace accidents. It is an effort to proactive accident prevention that focuses on At Risk Behavior or unsafe behaviors that have the possibility to cause an accident.

Why is Behavior Based Safety Training important?

Based on multiple studies and statistical data, all workplace accidents can be attributable to the factors of human behavior. It is more likely due to their dangerous actions or unsafe behaviors. For example, some workers are human beings who incline to make mistakes, are negligent, often resort to shortcuts, or even do not comply with the standard operating procedures.

Those workers’ unsafe behaviors are often never analyzed or reported. It leads to the term iceberg paradigm. Even if there is a reporting system, it usually will only result in a certain atmosphere of blaming each other—or, called the blame culture.

That is why Behavior Based Safety Training plays an important role here. The main purpose is to melt or even shrink those icebergs by applying policies or behaviors based on Occupational Safety and Health (OHS). The goal is to reduce workplace accidents caused by unsafe behaviors or to lessen and stop continuous icebergs.

How to do Behavior Based Safety Training

Behavior-Based Safety (BBS) Training is a deliberate process and package offered to any company that is willing to grow the OHS or safety culture in their organization. As an ongoing process, OHS requires the involvement and commitment of all parties in any organization.

Accordingly, the main actors who will be in charge of the BBS Training program are company leaders, including all managers and supervisors. More targeted participants are top management lineups, SHE, superintendents, ERP/IMT Team, staff, related vendors, or personnel who has the responsibility for the operational safety of work processes in a company.

Human resources that need to be prepared and trained for implementing BBS Training are, among others:

  • Steering Committee or Team that will discuss findings, schedule training, and propose any improvement.
  • Observers - those who are trained in techniques to conduct behavioral observations in the field.
  • Problem-Solving Team that consists of management and decision-makers

In practice, the trainees will be equipped with new methods to carry out quality conversations regarding OHS. Many advanced industries, especially those with zero workplace accidents, know this method very well. They pair it with a conducive OHS climate approach or a positive safety climate.

Some of the materials in training are, among others, principles of safety behaviors, behavioral analysis, human error and accident causation, legal compliance, communicating skills, development of critical behavioral checklist, coaching skills,  ABC model, leadership role in BBS implementation, and more.

Digital Solution to do Behavior-Based Safety Training

All employees have to participate in the BBS Training program despite their busy schedules. Implementing an all-in one platform that can help with Behavior Based Safety Training might be very helpful and efficient here.

Using an operation software, business leaders can develop behavior-based safety checklists or audit templates and send them out to the employees. By doing this, they can carry out behavioral observations in the organization. Both admin and employee also can upload images or other media files in real-time. Paperwork in this case, will be unnecessary, and deviations or issues in tasks can be monitored, tracked and resolved.

Relying on complete trust and cooperation between the leaders and employees, Behavior Based Safety Training is essential as it offers solutions for removing risks and hazards. It also fosters a safety culture in any workplace or organization, which is essential for long-lasting success. Ensure you instill this training in your business to upskill and raise awareness among your employees, particularly frontliners, in order to increase your operational performance.
